Iran-Syria Relations and the Popular Unrest in Syria

Abstract
When the Bashar Asad administration in Syria faced with growing international pressure due to violent
crackdown of anti-government protesters, solely Iran has stood behind him. Iran’s support to the Asad administration
has been considered to be in contrast with its apparent sympathy with the popular unrests in Arab
countries, which were branded by the Iranian leadership as ‘Islamic awakening.’ This study aimed at analyzing
reasons laying behind Iran’s support to Asad. In order to comprehend the Iranian attitude towards the
unrest in Syria, it analyzed foundations of Iran-Syria relations, which is dubbed as ‘alliance of convenience.’
It maintains that in addition to Iran’s uneasiness with the possibility of losing its only strategic partner in the
